What’s In A Name?
About Film / Concept
vibrant animations and heartfelt stories explore the rich cultural significance of names given to Black women worldwide, celebrating their individuality and shared stories of resilience, heritage, and identity.
Interactive Project
Have you ever wondered how someone got their name?
Or how seemingly mundane factors like rhyme or uniformity shape the names within a family?
On a deeper level, how do external influences like race, religion, colonization, politics, and gender affect the names people choose to answer to?
What’s In A Name? is a global, interactive storytelling project that explores the names people are given, the ones they are called, the ones they embrace, and the rich stories behind them.
With each story, I aim to explore themes of identity and self-definition, cultural heritage and ancestry, colonial history and cultural erasure, resistance and renaming, belonging and alienation, gender roles, language and sound, migration, and diaspora.
Storytelling Formats
I am collecting a diverse range of stories about people's names and choosing the most fitting storytelling format for each one. This approach allows me highlight the unique significance of each personal experience, bringing the stories to life in a way that resonates with each individual's journey and cultural contexts.
